USING
NEWBERYS IN THE CLASSROOM
Eighty
years ago the Newbery Award was created to honor and encourage
fiction written for young people. What makes a novel worthy
of a Newbery award? They are as diverse a bunch of books as
you can imagine ranging from realism to science fiction to
adventure and mysteries. They are all, however, good readswell-written,
thoughtful, and just right for kids. Every month Trumpet features
a number of Newbery novels and this month is no exception.
Plus we're providing you with Web sites to support your study
of these special award winners.

In Julie
of the Wolves, a favorite for almost 30 years, a young
Eskimo girl struggles to survive in the Arctic tundra with
only wolves to guide her. An exciting adventure story, it
includes remarkable details about wolf packs and the Eskimo
way of life. Equally compelling is last year's Honor Book,
Getting Near to Baby. When their baby sister dies and
their mother sinks into depression, Willa Jo and Little Sister
climb onto the roof of their aunt's house and won't come down.
Finally, don't miss this month's Newbery Girls, an
exciting collection of chapters from 15 award winners, including
Caddie Woodlawn, From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs.
Basil E. Frankweiler, Dicey's Song, and more. The
excerpts stand on their own or will get your students started
reading all 15 of these great books.
