She first moved to the United States at the age of 23 and lived in Portland, Oregon and later on the Oregon coast.
Petra had been an apprentice in the book business in Germany, and when she moved to the United States, she helped out a friend who owned a children's book store.
Petra realized how much she loved picture books from helping her friend. It was at that point that she decided to try creating a book of her own.
"I have this thing about chickens. I love their shape and the way I can make them move. I realized after the first Lottie book was done, that I had fallen in love with the whole neighborhood and with Lottie's friends. I've just finished the fourth book."
