Market Day
by Lois Ehlert

Activity: Create a class book inspired by favorite author and illustrator Lois Ehlert!

I Traveled to the Market and What Did I See...
Step 1
Ask the children to describe the different ways the characters in the story traveled to the market on market day. Review the pages with the children. List the children's answers on chart paper. Ask the children to describe how they go to the market with their family.

Step 2
Explain to the children that they will make a class book about the market. They will illustrate the book and create rhyming text. Invite three or four children to work on their book at a time. Provide each child with a sheet of drawing paper, pencils, and crayons. Assist the children in writing I traveled to the market and what did I see onto the bottom of their page, leaving enough space for the children to create an illustration of how they went to the market.

Step 3
Ask the children to think of something they would see at the market. It can be something real or something imaginative. Now ask the child to think of another word that rhymes with their first idea, even if it is silly like I saw corn and a horn, or I saw a pig dance the jig. Assist the children in writing their rhyming sentence on the reverse side of the paper along with another illustration.

Step 4
Brainstorm with the class to come up with a title for the book. Bind all of the pages together. Read the book during shared reading. Compare the children's market book to Market Day by Lois Ehlert. How are they similar? How are they different?
