Can You See the Red Balloon?
by Stella Blackstone
Make a search and find rhyming collage!
Materials:
A variety of old magazines and catalogs
Child safety scissors
Glue or glue stick
Construction paper (9"x12")
Markers, pencils, and crayons
Activity
Explain to the children that they will create a search and find collage. Review a few pages of Can You See the Red Balloon? with the children to discuss how the illustrator created pages full of abundant images. Provide the children with a sheet of construction paper, glue, scissors, and magazines and catalogs.
Ask the children to cut out pictures from the magazines and catalogs, filling the entire page. Children can also include their own drawings.
After the children have completed their collage ask them to create two rhyming sentences patterned after the text in the book i.e. Can you see the red balloon? Can you see the white moon? Ask each child to look at their collage to see if there are any pictures of things that rhyme i.e. Can you see the red clock? Can you see the blue sock? Children can also identify a picture on their collage and draw a picture of something that rhymes with it and affix it to their collage.
Assist the children in writing their two rhyming sentences to attach to their collage. Exhibit the children's work on a bulletin board or bind it together to create a class search and find rhyming book.
